These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Compose app ("Compose", "the App", "we", "us", or "our"). Compose is made by Samir Thapa, an independent developer in the United Kingdom.

You own everything you write (Section 4), and we never sell your data (Section 5). By downloading, installing, or using Compose, you agree to these Terms.

1. What Compose Does

Compose is an iOS app for journaling and managing screen time. You can choose apps to block until you've written an entry, while search, tags, memories, insights, and follow-up questions help you return to what you've written and reflect on it.

Compose uses Apple's Screen Time API to block the apps you choose, which means you'll need to give Compose the relevant permissions on your device.

2. Who Can Use Compose

Compose is available worldwide through the Apple App Store. You must be at least 16 years old to use Compose (or the minimum age required by the laws of your country, if higher). By using the App, you confirm that you meet this age requirement. If we become aware that a user is under the applicable minimum age, we will close their account and delete their data promptly.

You are responsible for making sure your use of Compose complies with the laws of your country or region.

3. Your Account

You can use Compose without signing up because the App creates a private account on your device. If you want to keep your journal across devices or recover it after losing your phone, sign in with Apple, Google, or an email address and password. Everything you've already written comes with you. You're responsible for keeping your login details secure, so contact us at contact@trycompose.app if you think someone has gained access to your account.

Each person may create one account, and the information you give us when creating it must be accurate.

4. Your Journal Content

You own everything you write. Compose doesn't claim ownership of your journal entries or anything else you create in the App, and we don't take any rights or license beyond the limited one described below.

By using Compose, you give us a limited, non-exclusive, revocable, and worldwide license to store, process, transmit, and display your journal content only so we can provide Compose to you. That covers storing your entries, organizing them with Compose's automatic features, and showing them back to you. The tags, memories, profile, and follow-up questions Compose creates from your writing belong to your account and are deleted with it. The license ends when you delete the content or your account.

Data Portability

You can export all your journal entries as Markdown or JSON straight from the App whenever you choose. There is no request or waiting period.

5. How We Handle Your Data

Your words belong to you. We don't sell your data or read your entries.

• We encrypt your entries while they're traveling to our servers and while they're stored there.
• Nobody at Compose reads your entries. Automated systems organize your journal.
• We never sell your journal entries or personal data.
• Your entries are not used to train AI models.
• You can lock the App with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
• We record which features people use and where they find the App confusing so we can improve Compose. These statistics are tied to your account ID and broad details about your device and app. They never include anything you write, the names of people or apps, or your email. You can turn them off with one toggle in your profile settings.
• Deleting your account in the App removes your journal and account record right away. We send deletion requests to our analytics providers at the same time.

6. How Entries Are Processed

Compose uses large language models to organize your journal through search, memories, insights, follow-up questions, and tags for emotions, topics, places, and people. Each entry is processed for these features without your name, email, or account attached. Our current provider is listed in section 7. We explain this during setup.

• We process entries only to provide these features to you.
• We only work with providers whose contracts forbid using your entries to train or improve their models. An entry may be held for up to 55 days solely to check for misuse, then deleted.
• A language model can misread your tone or get a detail wrong, so its output is a reading of your entry rather than a fact about your life. You can edit or delete anything it produces.

7. Third-Party Services

Compose relies on the following services to operate:

• Apple Screen Time API: app blocking on your device
• Google Firebase: sign-in, storage, and Compose's servers
• Google Gemini: organizing your entries
• Firebase Analytics, PostHog, and Crashlytics: usage analytics and diagnostics

Each service has its own terms and privacy policy.

8. App Blocking Disclaimer

Compose's app blocking feature is a productivity and wellbeing tool. We work to keep it reliable, but we cannot guarantee that it will work perfectly in every situation. iOS updates, device settings, and changes to the Screen Time API may affect blocking.

You acknowledge and agree that:

• Compose is not responsible for any consequences arising from an app being blocked or not blocked as expected.
• You should not rely solely on Compose's blocking features for situations where access to a specific app is critical (for example, emergency communications).
• It is your responsibility to configure your blocklist and allowlist appropriately.

9. Health and Wellbeing

Compose can help you build a journaling habit and be more deliberate about screen time. It is not a medical, therapeutic, or mental health service and doesn't replace professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Compose doesn't monitor you or alert anyone on your behalf.

If you're going through a hard time, reach out to someone who can help. You can call Samaritans on 116 123 at any time in the UK and Ireland, or call or text 988 in the US and Canada. Elsewhere, findahelpline.com lists free, confidential support by country. If you're in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.

10. Free and Paid Features

Compose's core journaling and screen time features are free.

We may add optional premium features with monthly or annual subscriptions. If we do, these terms will apply:

• We'll clearly communicate what's included in any paid tier before you subscribe.
• Subscriptions will be processed through the Apple App Store.
• Apple manages billing, renewals, and cancellations. Apple's terms explain how subscriptions work.
• Apple handles refunds under its refund policy. Refund requests must go through Apple Support.

We reserve the right to change pricing for premium features, but any changes will not affect active subscription periods you've already paid for.

11. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

• Use the App for any unlawful purpose.
• Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App.
• Abuse the App's API or infrastructure (for example, by making excessive automated requests).
• Use the journal-organizing features for anything other than your own journal, or try to make them produce unrelated content.
• Attempt to access other users' data or accounts.
• Use the App in any way that could damage, disable, or impair our services.

12. Account Suspension and Termination

We may suspend or terminate your account if:

• You violate these Terms, particularly the Acceptable Use section above.
• We detect abuse of our API or infrastructure.
• We are required to do so by law.

If we terminate your account, we'll make reasonable efforts to notify you in the App or by email and explain the reason. Where possible, we'll give you an opportunity to export your data before termination. If your account is terminated due to a violation of these Terms, your data will be deleted in accordance with our standard deletion process.

You can also delete your account at any time through the App. We remove your journal and account record right away, then our providers complete their deletion requests within the timeframes set out in the Privacy Policy.

13. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law:

• Compose is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
• We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free from harmful components.
• Automatically generated results may be inaccurate or incomplete, and you should not rely on them as fact.
• Our total liability to you for any claim arising from or related to your use of the App is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or £50, whichever is greater.
• We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law (including English law, EU consumer law, or the laws of your country of residence).

14. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll tell you in the App or by email before the changes take effect. If the changes are significant, we'll give you at least 30 days' notice.

Your continued use of Compose after the updated Terms take effect means you accept the changes. If you don't agree with the updated Terms, you should stop using the App and delete your account.

The latest version of these Terms will always be available at trycompose.app/terms.

15. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from or in connection with these Terms or your use of Compose will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

However, nothing in these Terms affects any mandatory consumer protection rights you may have under the laws of your country of residence. If you are a consumer in the European Union, you retain any rights granted under EU consumer protection law that cannot be overridden by contract. If you are a resident of the United States, you retain any rights under applicable state consumer protection laws that cannot be waived.

16. Open Source and Intellectual Property

The Compose name, logo, and branding are the intellectual property of Samir Thapa. You may not use our branding without prior written permission.

All third-party trademarks, logos, and service marks referenced in the App belong to their respective owners.
