Terms & Conditions
Welcome to Compose! These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Compose app ("Compose", "the App", "we", "us", or "our"). Compose is operated by Samir Thapa, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom.
By downloading, installing, or using Compose, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.
1. What Compose Does
Compose is a journalling and screen time management app for iOS. It helps you build a journalling habit by allowing you to block chosen apps until you've written a journal entry. The App also provides smart search, tagging, scheduling, and customisation features to help you reflect on your life more easily.
Compose uses Apple's Screen Time API to monitor and block apps you select. This requires granting Compose the relevant permissions on your device.
2. Who Can Use Compose
Compose is available worldwide through the Apple App Store. You must be at least 13 years old to use Compose (or the minimum age required by the laws of your country, if higher). By using the App, you confirm that you meet this age requirement. If we become aware that a user is under the applicable minimum age, we will terminate their account and delete their data promptly.
You are responsible for ensuring your use of Compose complies with the laws of your country or region.
3. Your Account
You can create a Compose account using Apple Sign In, Google Sign In, or an email address and password. You're responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. If you believe your account has been compromised, please contact us immediately at contact@trycompose.app.
You may only create one account per person. You agree to provide accurate information when creating your account.
4. Your Journal Content
You own everything you write. Compose claims no ownership, licence, or rights over your journal entries or any content you create within the App. Your entries are yours, full stop.
You can export your journal data at any time in JSON format.
5. How We Handle Your Data
We take your privacy seriously. Here's what you need to know:
- Encryption: Your journal entries are encrypted at rest on our servers.
- No selling of data: We will never sell your journal entries or personal data to third parties.
- No AI training on your entries: We do not use your journal entries to train any AI models — and neither do our third-party service providers.
- Face ID: You can enable Face ID to add an extra layer of protection to your journal.
- Anonymous analytics: We use anonymous analytics to understand how the App is used and to improve the experience. This data cannot be linked back to you or your journal entries.
- Account deletion: When you delete your account, your journal entries and personal data are deleted immediately from our servers.
For full details on how we collect, use, and protect your data, please refer to our Privacy Policy at trycompose.app/privacy.
6. AI-Powered Features
Compose uses AI to power features like smart search and intuitive tagging (for example, recognising locations, emotions, and topics in your entries). To provide these features, limited data from your entries may be processed by a third-party AI service.
We want to be clear about this:
- The AI processing is solely to deliver these features to you.
- Our third-party AI provider does not store your data or use it for model training.
- We do not use your journal entries to train any AI models, and neither does our AI provider.
You can use Compose without the AI-powered features if you prefer, though some functionality like smart search and auto-tagging will be limited.
7. Third-Party Services
Compose relies on the following third-party services to operate:
- Apple Screen Time API — for app blocking functionality
- Firebase — for authentication and secure cloud storage
- Anonymous analytics — to help us improve the App
These services have their own terms and privacy policies. We've chosen them carefully, but we encourage you to review their policies if you'd like to understand more.
8. App Blocking Disclaimer
Compose's app blocking feature is provided as a productivity and wellbeing tool. While we do our best to ensure it works reliably, we cannot guarantee that app blocking will function perfectly in every situation. Factors outside our control — such as iOS updates, device settings, or Screen Time API changes — may affect blocking behaviour.
You acknowledge and agree that:
- Compose is not responsible for any consequences arising from an app being blocked or not blocked as expected.
- You should not rely solely on Compose's blocking features for situations where access to a specific app is critical (for example, emergency communications).
- It is your responsibility to configure your blocklist and allowlist appropriately.
9. Health and Wellbeing Disclaimer
Compose is designed to support healthy habits like journalling and mindful screen time management. However, Compose is not a medical, therapeutic, or mental health tool. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
If you are experiencing mental health difficulties, please consult a qualified healthcare professional. Nothing in the App should be interpreted as medical or psychological advice.
10. Free and Paid Features
The core features of Compose — including journalling and screen time control — are free to use. We believe these should be accessible to everyone.
We may introduce optional premium features in the future, available through monthly or annual subscriptions. If and when we do:
- We'll clearly communicate what's included in any paid tier before you subscribe.
- Subscriptions will be processed through the Apple App Store.
- Billing, renewals, and cancellations are managed by Apple. Please refer to Apple's terms for details on how subscriptions work.
- Refunds for subscriptions are handled by Apple in accordance with their refund policies. To request a refund, please visit Apple's support page.
We reserve the right to change pricing for premium features, but any changes will not affect active subscription periods you've already paid for.
11. Acceptable Use
We want Compose to be a positive space. You agree not to:
- Use the App for any unlawful purpose.
- Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or tamper with the App.
- Abuse the App's API or infrastructure (for example, by making excessive automated requests).
- Attempt to access other users' data or accounts.
- Use the App in any way that could damage, disable, or impair our services.
12. Account Suspension and Termination
We hope it never comes to this, but we reserve the right to suspend or terminate your account if:
- You violate these Terms, particularly the Acceptable Use section above.
- We detect abuse of our API or infrastructure.
- We are required to do so by law.
If we terminate your account, we'll make reasonable efforts to notify you via email and explain the reason. Where possible, we'll give you an opportunity to export your data before termination. If your account is terminated due to a violation of these Terms, your data will be deleted in accordance with our standard deletion process.
You can also delete your account at any time through the App. When you do, your data is deleted immediately.
13. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
- Compose is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
- We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free from harmful components.
- Our total liability to you for any claim arising from or related to your use of the App is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim, or £50, whichever is greater.
- We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including loss of data, loss of profits, or loss of goodwill.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law (including English law, EU consumer law, or the laws of your country of residence).
14. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we'll notify you by email before the changes take effect. If the changes are significant, we'll give you reasonable notice (typically at least 14 days).
Your continued use of Compose after the updated Terms take effect means you accept the changes. If you don't agree with the updated Terms, you should stop using the App and delete your account.
The latest version of these Terms will always be available at trycompose.app/terms.
15. Governing Law and Disputes
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from or in connection with these Terms or your use of Compose will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
However, nothing in these Terms affects any mandatory consumer protection rights you may have under the laws of your country of residence. If you are a consumer in the European Union, you retain any rights granted under EU consumer protection law that cannot be overridden by contract. If you are a resident of the United States, you retain any rights under applicable state consumer protection laws that cannot be waived.
If you are an EU consumer, you may also be able to use the European Commission's Online Dispute Resolution platform at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
